What are Gladhands?

Gladhands are a standardized air connection used on trucks and trailers that use air brakes. They are called gladhands because when the connection is made they have the appearance of a pair of hands in a hand shake. Gladhands provide a quick and reliable means to connect the parking and emergency air circuits between trucks and trailers. Gladhands securely lock together and seal with a pair of grommets. The grommets will wear and will require routine replacement to prevent air leaks.

Types of Gladhands

Typically, the gladhands will be rigid mounted to a trailer and sit in a fixed location. On the truck they will be mounted at the ends of air hoses. The air hoses will be an adequate length to allow the truck to turn and the trailer to follow without pulling on the gladhands or destroying the lines. Basic gladhands will do the job but in some situations gladhands with different configurations can make life a bit easier.

Quick Release Gladhands: Quick release gladhands are normally ridged mounted and speed up brake release times. These include a built in quick release valve which helps exhaust air from the service brakes more quickly when the pedal is released.

Swing-Away Gladhands: Swing-away gladhands are trailer mounted and allow the connection to pivot with the trailer and when not in use, they will sit closer to the trailer instead of projecting out from the front of the trailer. This will lower the chance of catching a gladhand and breaking it off.

Angled Gladhands: Angled gladhands are trailer mounted and can be used when the location of the gladhand is abnormal and may pull on the truck’s air lines.

Gladhands with Shutoff: Gladhands with shutoff are available in both rigid and airline mounted. Gladhands with a shutoff can be used when the air connection is not isolated by a tractor protection valve or on a connection that will lose air when disconnected.

Gladhands with Grips: Gladhands with grips are truck airline mounted and can be helpful when working in colder climates with gloves on.

Gladhand Accessories

Gladhand Holder: Mount to the truck and allow you to mount the gladhand to the truck and protect the lines from damage when not in use. Some gladhand holders will also have a holder for your 7-way electrical connection.
Gladhand Lock: Used to deter trailer thieves or prevent connections to a certain airport.
Replacement Grommets for Gladhands: Can be color coded to identify emergency or service brakes or black for universal use. Grommets will wear out with normal use and having extras around can stop headaches. Can be found in standard rubber or more robust polyurethane
Gladhand Grommet with Screen: Used to prevent solid contaminants from entering your air system. Screens on gladhand grommets will prevent spiders and wasps from making nests inside your airlines when not in use.
Gladhand Handles: Can be added to most gladhands to assist with grip when gloves are on.

Gladhands are often abused and overlooked but when one is broken or starts to leak you will take notice quickly.
