Semi-Truck and Trailer Leaf Spring Hangers

Leaf spring hangers on heavy-duty trucks and trailers play a critical role in the function of the suspension systems. The leaf spring hangers act as frame attachment points for the leaf springs and leaf spring shackles on heavy-duty trucks. On heavy-duty trailers, the hangers will retain the springs with rebound bolts and allow them to change their length by sliding along wear pad areas designed into the hanger since most heavy-duty trailer suspensions use slipper springs. Carrying heavy loads over long distances takes its toll on the entire suspension system, but the spring hangers can often be overlooked until they fail or have so much wear that they are causing problems. Since spring hangers on heavy-duty vehicles experience high amounts of wear, it is far more common to replace while changing leaf springs or performing other suspension repairs.

Heavy Duty Truck Leaf Spring hangers

Most Heavy-duty trucks use hardened steel pins to attach the leaf springs to the hangers and shackles. These spring pins are greaseable using zircs in the ends of the pins, and the pins may be smooth sided or threaded. The main point of wear on leaf spring hangers is at the surfaces that the spring pin and the hanger interact. As the suspension moves the pins should glide on a layer of grease but if maintenance is not kept up the grease layer may not be adequate, and the pins will begin to wear into the hanger or the spring hanger bushings. Many hangers will have a replaceable bi-metal bushing like heavy-duty leaf springs, but on some hangers, the wear may be so severe that the bushing is worn through. When a bushing is worn through the hanger must be replaced. Hangers that do not have bushings are more susceptible to spring pin wear because the grease layer is the only protection that the hanger has from wear. Wear in the hangers will weaken the structure of the hanger and will leave excessive play in the spring pin and hanger. This can allow the suspension to move and cause alignment issues with abnormal tire wear.

Other trucks may use rubber hanger and leaf spring bushings. Rubber can be smoother riding compared to brass bushings, but it is susceptible to dry rot and damage from oil contamination. Rubber bushings will have an inner sleeve, or a solid steel pin vulcanized to the center. Both the steel sleeve and the built- in pin may experience wear and tear over time and need to be replaced. Allowing a rubber leaf spring hanger bushing to wear excessively may require the entire hanger to be replaced if it is damaged.

How to Identify Leaf Spring Hangers?

Leaf spring hangers on heavy-duty trucks are bolted on or riveted to the frame from the factory. A bolted-on hanger can be unbolted and replaced where a riveted hanger will need to have the rivets drilled for removal and replaced with bolts. When replacing heavy-duty truck hangers, it is essential to correctly identify the replacement to ensure that the installation goes smoothly. When looking for replacement hangers, several areas should be considered to confirm the replacement you order will fit.

casting numbers

Many manufacturers will include an identifying number that is cast into the hanger when it is produced. If a clear casting number is present, this can be useful in the search for a replacement. Measurements should still be taken to verify that replacements for that casting match.

Measuring the hanger

Familiarize yourself with your truck and the suspension system that it uses to make finding a replacement easier. Taking measurements of the hanger and knowing the suspension system the hanger is used on can make finding a replacement much more straightforward, even without any part numbers.

leaf spring hanger measurements
  • Mounting hole spacing and size ā€“ Measuring center to center on all mounting holes, take note of the distance between them vertically and horizontally. Due to space restrictions on truck frames, holes will not be evenly spaced. There will be holes on the face of the frame, but there may also be a flange that sits on the bottom of the frame for support that can also have mounting holes.
  • Spring pinhole size- Leaf spring hangers may directly interact with the spring pin, or they may use a bushing. The spring pin size or the size of the bushing will be essential to make sure that the hanger is compatible with the spring and pin.

OEM part numbers from dealer sources

In some cases where the truck is being used and not available for identification and measurement, it may be necessary to call your dealer and get replacement part numbers for the hanger. Most OEM numbers can be cross-referenced to aftermarket replacements even when the dealer may have discontinued the part.

Heavy-Duty Trailer Leaf spring hangers are made from cast steel or fabricated from heavy gauge steel plate, and they will be welded to the frame with very few trailer hangers being bolt-on. Trailer suspensions will typically use slipper type leaf springs, so the hangers on trailers differ from truck hangers. The leaf spring hangers on the trailer must retain the springs and allow them to slide along the hanger as they change length. The action of steel leaf springs sliding over the wear pad areas of the hanger will slowly cause wear of both the spring and hanger. As these items wear, they will need to be replaced.

Different Types of Leaf Spring Hangers

When choosing a trailer leaf spring hanger, it is essential to know what suspension system your trailer is using and the mounting style of the hanger. Trailer hangers can have three different frame mounting styles:

Under-mount

Hangers that are under-mounted will have a flat plate across the top that will rest against the bottom of the trailer frame where they will be welded. They are called undermount since they are entirely under the frame.

Straddle mount

Spring hangers that straddle mount will straddle the frame and be welded on the inside and outside of the frame. In some applications you will be able to move the hanger up and down the frame to adjust the final mounting height.

Flange mount

Flange mount hangers are a mix of under mount and side mount and have an ā€œLā€ shaped mounting plate. The mounting plate will wrap around the side of the frame and install on the side and the bottom of the frame. Flange mount hangers can be bolt-on, weld-on, or a mixture of both.

It will also be essential to take some measurements when replacing trailer leaf spring hangers and compare them with the measurements that we list on our website. Simple hangers may only have a few sizes but with more complicated spring hangers the number of measurements listed will increase. Just like truck hangers, using OEM part numbers can also be helpful when looking for replacement hangers as well as casting numbers on the hangers themselves.
