Many trucks with lighter suspension capacities will use rubber suspension bushings as a smoother riding alternative to bi-metal bushings and hardened steel pins. On suspensions using rubber bushings, leaf spring bolts are the preferred attachment method. When using a rubber bushing, a greaseable pin is not necessary since there should be little wear on the hardened bolt from the bushing sleeve.
Leaf Spring bolts will be sized correctly for the suspension and the location that they are used in. Spring hardware may be metric or standard-sized despite where the vehicle is produced, and the bolts used in the front of the spring and the rear of the spring and spring shackle assembly will not always be sized the same. Spring bolts will typically be hardened, Grade 5 or 8 for standard sizes, and 8.8-10.9 for metric, and they will be sized appropriately for the suspension system that they are used in. Using a bolt with the incorrect smaller size may leave too much clearance inside the bushing and cause suspension noise and damage, and a bolt that is too large will not fit. Also, using a bolt of the correct length is essential to avoid interference with other suspension components and possible damage.
When changing leaf springs , it is recommended to change all attaching hardware that shows any wear or any hardware that was used with locking nuts. This will ensure that the installation is sound and long-lasting. When installing new bolts, they should always be torqued to the OEM specifications. Reusing worn components can cause alignment issues and premature tire wear.
