Air dryers are used as a filtration system on heavy-duty trucks, buses, and coaches that use compressed air to operate many of the systems on the vehicle including suspension and brakes. An air dryer is the vehicle’s primary defense against water, oil, and contaminants that may damage air valves and compromise the performance of the air driven systems. Removing oil prevents damage to rubber seals, O-rings, and diaphragms that are used internally in air valves. Contamination can be especially damaging to expensive and complicated ABS valves. Removing water prevents freeze-ups in cold conditions that could block air lines and damage valves. Air dryers are self-contained and include a replaceable filter cartridge that should be serviced at appropriate intervals for the vehicles use.
When air is compressed the water vapor in the air condenses. On air systems, this water will collect in the lines or an air tank (wet tank), and before this air is fed to the rest of the system, it is passed through the air dryer. Air dryers work by passing compressed air through filtration media that collects oil (oil coalescing) and a desiccant media that absorbs moisture. The clean and dry air is then passed to the air reservoirs for use in the different systems. The moisture and oil will build up in the filter cartridge, and it is purged every time the air governor reaches the cut-out setting. The purge cycle sends a small amount of dry air back through the cartridge which carries oil and water out through the base of the air dryer. This purge cycle renews the cartridge and allows it to continue filtering until its service interval is up and the cartridge is changed. Air dryers will be equipped with a 12-volt or 24-volt heater to prevent the purge valve from freezing shut in cold weather when an air dryer is the most critical.
There are a large variety of air dryers on the market, and different designs and manufacturers have different features and benefits. At TruckSpring.com we carry full replacement units for the most popular models by SKF, Bendix, and Meritor Wabco. We also carry a large variety of service parts and cartridges for less popular models.
Turbo 2000 – The SKF Turbo 2000 is very popular on severe service applications with high duty cycle and high compressor CFM. The Turbo 2000 has a high ratio of purge volume to desiccant which allows it fully purge water and contaminates on its purge cycle and a multi-stage filtering system to strip away as much moisture and compressor blow-by as possible. A spin-off cartridge and means you can service the dryer in minutes and a 75-watt integrated heater keeps the Turbo 2000 air dryer working in the harshest conditions.
AD-2 – The Bendix AD-2 air dryer is a time-tested air dryer that is popular on older trucks. It has a long- lasting desiccant cartridge which allows a longer service interval and a slim in-line design that saves space. The AD-2 air dryer has a large integrated purge volume that allows a large amount of contaminated to removed during the purge cycle. Bendix AD-2 air dryers are simple and serviceable with a purge valve and desiccant cartridges that can be re-built.
AD-9 – The Bendix AD-9 is one of the most popular air dryers on the market today. The AD-9 has a wide variety of vehicle applications and a simple, compact design. The AD-9 is easily mounted with a clamp type bracket and servicing the dryer is simple. The desiccant cartridge is a spin on type protected under an outer shell cover. The check valve and the purge valve with integrated heater can both be easily serviced from the exterior without the removal of the air dryer. Service parts for the Bendix AD-9 are plentiful with almost every component available for replacement, and complete replacement units are available for very reasonable prices.
System Saver 1200 – The Wabco System Saver 1200 may be the most compact air dryer on the market. Weighing in at only 11.1 pounds the SS1200 has all the features you want in an air dryer with no wasted space or bulk. System Saver 1200 air dryers have built-in mounting points, a 100-watt heater in 12 or 24 volts, and a pressure relief valve. The Wabco SS1200 dryer uses a spin on cartridge filled with premium desiccant, and all service items can be replaced without removing the air dryer. The System Saver is a great option for small spaces and retrofits as it requires no dedicated tank and uses system air for regeneration.
Compressed air plays a huge role in the operation of heavy-duty trucks, heavy-duty trailers, buses, heavy equipment, and motor coaches. Supplying critical systems with clean, dry, filtered air is important to maintaining these systems and keeping the vehicle in operation. As air systems get more complicated with ABS, traction, roll stability, and automatic braking, protecting the sensitive and expensive air valves becomes more important. Air dryers are a critical part of the air system, and a correctly operating air dryer can keep you on the road and making money. A healthy and properly functioning dryer can protect the air system and prevent freeze up. If you are servicing, repairing, or replacing your air dryer look to us at TruckSpring.com for the parts you need to keep your truck on the road.
