Motor mounts bear the weight of the entire engine and help to dampen the vibrations that would otherwise be transferred to the frame. Factory motor mounts are made of rubber and like all rubber parts, they will deteriorate over time. The natural deterioration of rubber motor mounts can be accelerated by chemicals found in the presence of heavy-duty truck engines: oil, grease, and diesel fuel. As motor mounts deteriorate the engine may begin to move and shift within the frame and the vibrations of the running engine will start to be felt by the driver. If the deterioration is severe enough the engine may be allowed to move far enough that wires or hoses can be damaged and broken.
Upgraded motor mounts are available for most applications in polyurethane material. Polyurethane motor mounts will not experience the natural breakdown that rubber and polyurethane are much more resistant to break down from chemical exposure. ATRO modifies the formula depending on the usage to provide excellent vibration dampening properties and longevity. In most applications, polyurethane bushings can also be ordered in a high temp option that will resist the higher under-hood temperatures of modern trucks running EGR and SCR systems.
Motor mounts will be specific to the make and model of truck they are installed in as well as the engine that is being used. When ordering replacement motor mounts, it is recommended to use the OEM part numbers as a cross-reference to avoid any fitment issues. Measurements can be used to confirm a cross-reference but since they will deform over their lifetime, it is not recommended to use measurements alone as a replacement. Replacing motor mounts can be a difficult job and the last thing that we would want is to find out that you have the incorrect part in the middle of a job.
When replacing motor mounts, it is recommended to replace the attaching hardware as part of the job. Many motor mounts will be available in kits that include the new mounts and the hardware that is required to replace them. These kits may include multiple mounts on applications that will use them so the kit may be a “Front Motor Mount kit” or a “Rear Motor Mount kit” and include the necessary bushings and hardware.
