what is a trailer leaf spring?

The springs on your trailer act as the connection between the axle and the frame. They allow a built-in “give” in the suspension that allows the axle to move up and down without allowing side to side movement. Without a spring, the axle and frame would be rigidly mounted leaving only the tires to absorb the shock from the road and the weight that the trailer is carrying. This would quickly lead to broken components.

Trailer springs are leaf springs. The spring is composed of one or more thin pieces of steel or “leaves” which are curved in an arch. The number and thickness of the leaves determine the amount of weight the spring can carry. The curve of these leaves is the arch of the spring which controls the ride height of the trailer. In most trailer configurations the springs will sit below the axle, this is known as underslung. An underslung suspension lowers the ride height which can dramatically increase the stability of a trailer. In some 5th wheel and gooseneck campers, the suspension will be overslung with the springs above the axle. This brings the ride height up and allows the trailer to connect to the in-bed hitches.

What are the benefits of leaf springs on a trailer?

A leaf spring trailer suspension is inexpensive and easy to maintain. The two main types of light trailer suspension are leaf spring and torsion axle. A torsion axle uses a two-piece square axle with rubber cords inside. This allows the axle to twist inside of itself acting as a spring. A torsion axle is simple, but it is non-serviceable, meaning that when it fatigues the entire assembly must be replaced. A leaf spring suspension has the benefit of individualized components. This means that if one component wears or fails it can be replaced on its own and the entire system will function as new. This can result in significant cost savings over the life of the trailer. A spring suspension can be configured in a single axle, a tandem (2 axle), and a tri-axle (3 axle). This gives each wheel its own spring and allows it to move independently from others which makes it better suited for use on uneven ground. Maintenance can be done on a spring suspension and parts are easily changed where a torsion axle is replaced as an entire unit and will require welding and re-alignment of the trailer to prevent dog tracking.

Why do trailer springs need to be replaced?

The springs do a huge amount of work. When your trailer is moving the springs are moving and as the metal leaves are flexed back and forth constantly they will begin to fatigue. With age, a spring will wear and lose arch. If one side of the trailer has seen more weight than the other this may present itself by causing a lean. If all springs have worn evenly the trailer may be sitting lower than it once did. This may limit suspension travel and cause the trailer to bottom out. Some springs may wear to a point that one or more leaves may break causing a potentially hazardous situation where the axle is no longer fully attached to the trailer. Situations like this can be prevented by including your trailer spring in your normal trailer maintenance.

How do I inspect my trailer springs?

Trailer springs are composed of many individual pieces that all play a role in the function of the spring. Knowing what to look for while doing maintenance and making the necessary repairs can keep you from being stuck on the side of the road. Below is a list of items that indicate problems with your trailer springs, these should be remedied before using your trailer further.

Broken or Cracked Spring Leafs

As springs wear there is a potential for leaves to crack or break. When inspecting for this look for portions of leaves that are missing or gaps along the length of the leaf. A crack will appear as a dark line that is perpendicular to the length of the spring. When a leaf cracks you lose the strength of this leaf and the puts additional stress on the other leaves. This may cause a domino effect where other leaves begin to break resulting in the potential for a hazardous situation. The entire spring should be replaced and replacing the other spring on that axle should also be strongly considered. Finding a crack in one leaf is a good excuse to thoroughly inspect the other springs and look for similar damage.

Crooked Springs

You may run across a spring with the leaves fanned out instead of lined up neatly. This is due to loosened U-bolts. Without the correct clamping pressure, the springs may freely shift and this can cause issues. Without all the leaves in the pack aligned the spring will be weaker. This can cause damage to the spring or even bend the spring. If the spring is bent it should be replaced, metal fatigue will cause this spring to break rather quickly after a bend is placed in one of the leaves. The U-bolts should also be replaced if found loose. U-bolt torque should be checked as part of a regular maintenance schedule to prevent this from happening.

Worn Bushings

Anywhere that a spring accepts a bolt will use a bushing to prevent wear on the steel used in the spring. On trailer springs these will normally be a nylon material or a rubber bushing with a steel sleeve. As the spring flexes it pivots on this bolt and over time the friction between the bolt and bushing will wear at the material. A rubber bushing may show wear of the inner sleeve or deterioration of the rubber. Any of these bushings can be checked by gently prying on the spring near bushing and looking for excessive movement. Any movement in the bushing translates to movement in the axle and this may wear tires or cause dog tracking. Dog tracking is a condition where the trailer will not follow behind the tow vehicle and may try to steer itself out of your lane. If the wear is limited to only the bushings they can be replaced, and the trailer will function like new. If the wear has moved through a bushing and had damaged a spring, the entire spring should be replaced.

Excessive Corrosion

All trailer leaf springs are made of steel and they will eventually rust. This can be an issue with trailers used during winter months in states that use salt on the roads or especially on boat trailers used in salt water. This will normally show as surface rust and the structural integrity of the spring will not be affected. In some cases, the corrosion may worsen and begin to weaken the spring. Pitting of the springs is abnormal and will weaken the material, pitting can lead to leaf breakage and a pitted spring should be replaced. Over time corrosion may occur between the leaves of the spring forcing them apart. This weakens the spring considerably as they are no longer working together to support the load of the trailer. A spring with the leaves splayed out instead of together in a tight group should be replaced.

Broken Center Bolt

The center bolt runs through the center of the spring pack and holds it together for assembly and centers it in the axle. If U-bolts are loosened the center bolt will take extra load and may break allowing the spring to shift on the axle. The center bolt should be replaced as well as the U-bolts. U-bolt torque should be checked as part of a regular maintenance schedule to prevent loosening.
